Whales, Welcome, and Water
Imagine mist-laden dawn lighting the horizon as your boat drifts gently through the quiet waters off Tan-awan, Oslob. You’ve woken before sunrise—your heart brims with anticipation as the briefings begin. The rules aren’t just for your safety—they’re for theirs too.
In a few moments, you'll slip into the warm, turquoise sea and come face-to-face with the ocean’s gentle giants: whale sharks.
Here’s how to ensure that magical morning unfolds safely and respectfully—for both you and the sharks.
Safe Swimming Tips: Story Told, Guidelines Given
1. Begin with the Briefing
Before entering the water, you gather at the briefing center. Local guides, including barangay tanods and trained sea wardens, walk through the rules calmly and clearly—this orientation isn’t optional; it’s essential. You’re fitted with a life jacket and reminded to stay calm, oriented, and attentive.
2. Only Paddle Boats—No Motors
As you approach the interaction zone, you notice only manual banca boats—no engines. This ensures the sharks are not disturbed by motorboat noise or propellers.
3. Keep Your Distance
You ease into the water, fins gliding gently. The rule is clear: at least 5 meters from the head, 6 meters from the tail, and no hovering in front of the mouth. This protects both you and them.
4. No Touching, Feeding, or Blocking
Your guide emphasizes it again: do not touch, ride, chase, or feed the whale sharks. Stay to the side; let them move freely.
5. No Splashing or Sunscreen
You slip into the water as quietly as possible—no jumping, no splashing. Remember, sunscreen is banned to protect the fragile marine environment and the whale sharks themselves.
6. Flash Photography Is a No-Go
If you take photos, the flash stays off. It can startle or disrupt the sharks’ natural behavior.
7. Time Is Precious—30 Minutes Only. Your moment with these giants is intimate, yet intentionally brief. The interaction is capped at 30 minutes per group, ensuring minimal disruption.
8. Life Jackets & Inclusivity
You're assured: even non-swimmers and children aged 7 and above may join safely—just wear your life jacket.
Why These Rules Matter
These guidelines aren’t arbitrary—they stem from a municipality-led regulatory framework (Municipal Ordinance 091-s-12, Regulation No. 296) and nearby associations like TOSWFA and LAMAVE overseeing enforcement.
Together, these measures aim to protect both human safety and whale shark welfare, balancing tourism with conservation.

If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping into a scene straight out of a tropical postcard, Moalboal’s Secret Beach is one of those places that feels like a hidden paradise waiting to be discovered. Unlike Panagsama or White Beach, where the crowd usually gathers for snorkeling and nightlife, this tucked-away gem offers serenity, clear turquoise waters, and the kind of quiet that makes you forget the rush of the outside world.
I remember the first time I went there—it wasn’t on the map, and there were no big signs pointing the way. A friendly local told me, “Kung gusto kag hilom, adto sa Secret Beach.” (“If you want peace and quiet, go to the Secret Beach.”) And they were right. To get there, you’ll need to pass through narrow paths surrounded by coconut trees, until finally, the sound of the waves greets you.
Tips for Visiting Secret Beach, Moalboal
1. How to Get There
By Tricycle or Motorbike: Locals can point you to the pathway leading to the beach. It’s about 10–15 minutes away from Panagsama.
Ask the Locals: Don’t be shy—residents know the place well and can guide you better than Google Maps.
2. What to Bring
Snorkeling Gear: The water is calm and great for exploring small reefs.
Eco-friendly Sunscreen: Protect your skin without harming the marine life.
Snacks and Water: There are no vendors around, so bring your own supplies.
3. Do’s and Don’ts
✅ Do respect the locals—this area is still part of their community.
✅ Do take your trash with you—help keep the beach clean and pristine.
✅ Do enjoy the peace—leave the loudspeakers behind.
❌ Don’t damage corals or marine life while swimming.
❌ Don’t leave plastics behind—this is a secret spot worth protecting.
4. Best Time to Visit
Early morning or late afternoon for fewer crowds and the best golden-hour views.
Why Visit Secret Beach?
The Secret Beach is perfect for those who want a laid-back escape in Moalboal—whether you’re a couple looking for a romantic spot, a solo traveler seeking calm, or a group of friends who want a beach all to themselves. It’s not about the nightlife or restaurants; it’s about reconnecting with nature, letting the waves recharge you, and experiencing Cebu in its raw, untouched beauty.
So the next time you’re in Moalboal, take a little detour. Trust me—this hidden paradise will be one of your most cherished memories.

Step away from Cebu City’s hustle, and you’ll find yourself prompted to venture into the serene hills of Sibonga. There, perched atop Marian Hills, stands the enchanting Simala Church—an awe-inspiring blend of architectural wonder, spiritual heart, and local devotion that feels lifted from a fairy tale.
Built in 1998 by the Marian Monks of Eucharistic Adoration, the monastery was established to house a revered image of the Virgin Mary.
It's design—towering spires, ornate terraces, and sweeping arches—echoes Gothic castles of Europe, transplanted into Cebu’s lush countryside.
A Place of Miracles and Hope
Simala’s reputation owes much to devotion. In 1998, a statue of the Virgin Mary reportedly shed tears—coinciding with healing in a dengue outbreak—earning the church the nickname "Miraculous Mama Mary Church"
Inside, walls are lined with letters, photos, and medical records—the offerings of those who believe in answered prayers. Visitors light candles—white for guidance, yellow for peace, red for love—each color symbolizing a heartfelt plea. Quiet prayer nooks and a testimony hall offer space for reflection and renewal
Often overlooked on itineraries, many travelers stumble upon Simala by chance—and are amazed they hadn’t discovered it sooner. Its remote location only heightens the enchantment, giving visitors a sense of discovery and contemplation.
A Journey of Wonder & Reflection
Explore Simala, and you’re more than just a tourist—you become part of a tapestry woven from local faith, architectural grandeur, and personal stories of healing. Whether seeking solace, spiritual connection, or simply aesthetic marvels, Simala Church invites you in, wrapped in stone beauty and heartfelt reverence.
